”That’s when I knew: this world, I never want to leave.”

Baltus Klip (28), Customer Service Team Lead at Broekman Logistics

“At twenty, I did my graduation internship at DSV in Denmark. I lived in the port town of Horsens and was impressed by all those ships. We often had parties in glass domes right in the harbor, and I would often find myself looking around. That’s when I knew: this world, I never want to leave. When I arrive at Broekman in the morning, I see the tracks around me, the terminals, the large ships, and those enormous shoeboxes, as we call them. It gives me a powerful feeling, as if I am on a movie set.

In school, you only get theory, but you only really realize how incredibly big and impressive it is when you are right in the middle of it. Initially, you think: what am I looking at? How does it all work? What’s behind all this? But the more you delve into it, the more you learn. I learn something new every day. The days just fly by, it’s unbelievable. I look at my watch twice, and then it’s already time to go home. Sometimes I work ten or twelve-hour days, but if you enjoy it so much, it’s worth it.

I have always had three goals: a permanent contract, a leadership position, and to keep learning. I’m quite proud that I achieved all three so quickly at Broekman. Two years ago, I started as a specialist in the customer service department. I immediately liked the customer contact because I can talk well. ‘You could sell anything,’ they sometimes say. It’s very satisfying to handle everything from A to Z for a large client. It remains logistics, so it’s always hectic, but when a job goes well, I feel completely happy. After six months, I was asked to become a team lead and immediately got a permanent contract. Totally awesome. The fun part of this job is that you experience everything from A to Z and see your customers grow.

I work with a very close-knit and driven team. We all get along well. We make sure we can take over each other’s clients and – not unimportantly – we regularly have planned and spontaneous outings. For example, we all go to Biergarten or sit on the terrace in Brielle. Within Broekman, you don’t feel any hierarchy at all. Last month, I was playing padel with the CEO, and we had a beer afterwards. That just feels right.

I regularly receive job offers through acquaintances and LinkedIn, but I always say straight away: ‘No, I’ll stay here for a while.’ The only downside is that since I’ve been here, I think I’ve gained fifteen kilos. With our team, we have a different ‘food day’ every day. Monday is toastie day, Tuesday a colleague makes nice sandwiches, Wednesday is sausage day, with hot dogs, Thursday is a bit of everything day, and we’ve renamed Friday to airfryday.”
